an autumn hike in the trees

Over my kids’ Fall Break, one of the things we did was drive up to Flagstaff and went to the Lamar Haines trailhead again. We went here this summer for the first time, and wanted to go back in the fall. Turns out we timed it pretty well. A few trees were still green, some others had already lost their leaves, but most of the aspens on this trail were in full golden fall splendor. As a bonus, my younger son (who loves to explore and discover) found the pictographs and petroglyphs we missed the first time, which now that I’ve seen them, I’m guessing they reference the presence of the spring water (Veit Springs) near the rocks on which they appear. If that interests you, they are worth seeing; they are quite distinct and well-preserved. “Nature is the Art of God”… Here is some of His recent work!

spent a few minutes off the trail with my younger son (this aspen grove was so incredibly tranquil, I didn’t want to leave)
